How does a DFT Security system work?

Once you've decided to purchase a security system, there are still some decisions you'll need to make regarding the type of protection you need. This information has been prepared to help you understand the key elements of a security system. Your DFT Security Professional can answer any further questions you might have, so don't hesitate to call us.

A DFT Security system consists of a control panel which functions as a central computer, receiving messages from a number of sensors that act as the "eyes" and "ears" of the system. If the system is "armed" and the panel receives a signal it automatically alerts the DFT Security Central Monitoring Center via the built-in telephone communicator and/or the optional PRN radio or UPLink Cellular transmitter. The DFT Security dispatcher then alerts the appropriate authorities and other you designate to the emergency condition.

Keypads located near common entry doors allow you to control the system. Any number of other products and devices make up a DFT Security system.

  • Magnetic Contacts to protect doors and windows that open.
  • Glass Breakage Sensors to protect windows and glass doors
  • Motion Sensors to detect movement within a defined area.
  • Panic Switches that can be manually operated to summon the authorities and/or sound an alarm siren.
  • Window Alarm Screens, which allow alarm protection with windows wide open.
  • Sirens and Sounders to alert you and your neighbors of an alarm activation.
  • Smoke and Heat detectors to alert you and the Fire Department of a fire.
  • Environmental Sensors such as Freeze Alarms, Water Leakage and Carbon Monoxide Detectors.
Can I have my system turned on when I'm home?

Yes, your system can be designed in any number of ways to accommodate your lifestyle. You can choose from several levels of protection. For example, when you are away from home you can have all sensors activated. When you are at home in the evening, watching TV or making dinner, you can choose to have your door and window sensors activated and your motion sensors off. Your DFT Security Professional can help design the system that works best for you.

What is Magnetic Contact?

It is a two-part device that protects doors and windows that open. One part of the contact is a switch , installed in the door or window jamb or frame; the other is installed in the door or window itself and contains a magnet that signals an alarm when it moves "out-of-contact" (range) with the switch.

How does a Glass Breakage Sensor work?

There are two basic types of glass breakage sensors= an "acoustic" sensor that is mounted on a wall or ceiling and listens for the sound of breaking glass in a window or door and a "shock" sensor that is mounted on the window and "feels" the shock of breaking glass. Optimally, a glass breakage sensor could detect an intruder while he is still outside your home. Your DFT Security Professional will be able to recommend the best product for each room in your home.

What is a PIR?

A passive infrared motion detector (PIR) is a security sensor that detects an intruder by sensing his body heat as he passes through the area "covered" by the PIR. Since PIR's are motion sensors, they are designed to be used when no one is at home or when the family will not be moving through the protected areas. If you will have dogs or cats home when the PIR is on, Let your DFT Security Professional know so that he can provide you with the appropriate system design.

I have a battery-operated Smoke Detector, why would I need one on a security system?

A system smoke detector that is connected to DFT's control panel provides more protection than a "stand-alone" detector because it is monitored. This means that when smoke or excessive heat is detected, an alarm is sounded and a signal is sent to the control panel. The panel automatically signals the DFT Security Central Monitoring Center via the built-in telephone communicator and/or the optional PRN radio or UPLink Cellular transmitter. The DFT Security dispatcher then alerts the Fire Department. All this, even if you're not home.
